One of our most exciting offerings, this tour allows guests to ski a new volcano each day, and stay in a hotel each night. The pace of the tour allows us to build upon the successes of each objective and acclimatize to the altitudes we will eventually encounter. We also provide the opportunity to visit the historic villages of Villa Pehuenia and Caviahue and experience the local culture that inhabits this enticing landscape. Our travels through the northern reaches of the Neuquen Province will take us to ski two volcanoes: Volcán Batea Mahuida and Volcán Copahue, as well as many other remote peaks. The exhilaration of descending the sustained vertical off of each summit is matched only by the views enjoyed on the way down. After riding these sleeping giants, we’ll toast to our accomplishments with the finest regional wine from local vineyards. For those with a penchant for exploration and excitement without the desire to spend nights out in the cold, this trip offers a unique opportunity to experience magical moments with close friends and comfortable accommodations.

Day 1

Arrive in Neuquen, meet your guide(s) and depart the fertile Alto Valle, crossing the Patagonian steppe to reach the small Mapuche town of Villa Pehuenia. After settling in at your lakefront lodging, rest or take a stroll along Aluminé Lake, before we head into town for our Welcome Dinner.

Night in Villa Pehuenia

Day 2

A short 15-minute drive up the road takes us to the local ski hill, Cerro Batea Mahuida, where we will warm up and begin our 1,000 vertical-foot climb to the top of Volcán Batea Mahuida (6,391 ft./1,948 m). After skiing the crater, we will return to town for aprés ski festivities and dinner.

Night in Villa Pehuenia

Day 3

In the morning we will travel north, along the Argentina-Chile border, to Caviahue, one of the most unique mountain towns in the world. Our first day here will be spent skiing amongst the araucaria trees, on the slopes of the Cerro Caviahue ski resort. Afterward, we can visit the nearby thermal baths. In Caviahue, we have the option of either lakefront lodging or slopeside accommodations at the ski resort. Either option offers authentic Patagonian cuisine for dinner.

Night in Caviahue

Day 4

Departing from Caviahue in the morning, we will board a Hägglunds Bandvagn snowcat for our approach to the smoking volcanic crater beyond the ski resort boundary. A moderate climb of around 500 vertical feet will bring us to the top of Volcán Copahue (9,833 ft./2,997 m). From the top of the volcano, we will have a nearly 4,000 vertical-foot descent back to the ski resort base area. We will enjoy aprés ski festivities to celebrate our triumphant day, followed by dinner.

Night in Caviahue

Day 5

Choose your adventure, depending on weather and snow conditions:

(Option 1 or Option 2)

  1. Snowmobile-accessed backcountry skiing in the Caviahue backcountry, followed by a relaxing visit to the thermal mineral baths at Copahue.
    • Spa treatments and mud baths available
  2. Venturing further into Patagonian frontier, we will travel to Chos Malal, at the northern edge of the Neuquen province. This first day in Chos Malal will be spent as a recon day for the final objective of our trip. It’s about an hour drive up to the small Cerro Wayle ski area, where we can ski a bit and get a good look at our route. After heading back down to town, we will have dinner and rest up for a big day in the morning.

Night in Caviahue or Chos Malal

Day 6

Choose your adventure, depending on weather and snow conditions:

(Option 1 or Option 2)

  1. Snowmobile-accessed backcountry skiing in the Caviahue backcountry, followed by a relaxing visit to the thermal mineral baths at Copahue.
    • Spa treatments and mud baths available
  2. We will leave town early in the morning and drive up to Laguna Tromen, aptly named for the volcano at whose base it lies. A long 6,000 vertical-foot climb takes us to the summit of Volcán Tromen (13, 051 ft./3,978 m), where we will enjoy an incredible 360-degree view of the surrounding area, including the infamous Volcán Domuyo (15,449 ft./4,709 m), “the roof of Patagonia”. After a thrilling 6,000 vertical-foot descent of Tromen’s west face, we will return to town for a victorious Farewell Dinner and fiesta in town.

Night in Caviahue or Chos Malal

Day 7

Drive back to the city of Neuquen, and enjoy an Alto Valle wine tour before returning to the Neuquen Airport for your flight back to Buenos Aires.
