In our constant quest to bring our guests the most unique and authentic skiing experiences in South America, we are happy to unveil our newest Ski Tour, Ruta 40 Ski Week: Extreme Edition. This incredible 6 day/7 night journey into the wilds of Argentine Patagonia is a more intense backcountry oriented version of our classic Ruta 40 Ski Week.

El Cañadon del Silencio - Monte Bianco Backcountry
El Cañadon del Silencio (“The Canyon of Silence”) – Monte Bianco Backcountry

Starting in the small mountain town of Esquel, in southern Argentina, the tour kicks off at the nearby La Hoya ski resort, skiing the surrounding backcountry terrain. A Welcome Dinner awaits in town, accompanied by live local blues music. We then venture to the more remote Monte Bianco ski area, where we will ride snowmobiles to a rustic mountain hut and ski in the breath-taking Cañadon del Silencio (“Canyon of Silence”). After enjoying some aprés ski festivities back at the hut, we will venture north to El Bolson, through the beautiful Los Alerces National Park.

El Bolson is mostly known for being a relaxed hippie mountain town. It is also bordered by immense peaks to the east and west, prime backcountry skiing areas that see little or no traffic in winter. The first day in El Bolson begins with an early morning 4×4 excursion up to Refugio Piltriquitron for a day of ski touring on Cerro Piltriquitron, known as “El Piltri” by the locals. The second day will be spent at the recently revived Cerro Perito Moreno ski area, where we will take a snowcat up to a massive glacial plateau for a day of backcountry ski touring in some of the highest peaks in the area. After enjoying fresh turns in the high country above town, we will enjoy fresh craft beer at the famous El Bolson brewery, before continuing north on the historic Ruta 40 to San Carlos de Bariloche.

Better known as Bariloche, the town of San Carlos de Bariloche is the main hub for mountain recreation in the Lake District region of Patagonia. Departing early in the morning from our lakefront lodging on the shores of Lago Nahuel Huapi, we will load up a 4×4 for our approach to Cerro Lopez. This broad-faced mountain towers over the lake, offering some of the most expansive views of Bariloche, as one of the most prominent peaks in the area. After some amazing backcountry ski descents, we will enjoy an on-mountain picnic at Refugio Lopez before heading back down into town. The last day of the trip will be spent at the remarkable Cerro Catedral ski resort to explore its expansive lift-accessed backcountry ski terrain. We also offer an upgrade to snowcat skiing at the nearby Baguales Mountain Reserve – visit our Snowcat Skiing page for more details.

It is with great joy that we are offering the Ruta 40 Ski Week: Extreme Edition for the 2015 ski season in Argentina. Another Patagonia Ski Tours original, this exciting trip is sure to become one of our classic ski adventures.
