That’s right, FREE skiing and snowboarding at Chapelco to kick off the 2012 ski season! They will be opening this Saturday, June 30. Check out our previous post for the opening dates for all ski resorts in Argentina. It has been steadily snowing in the Patagonian Andes for the past week or so, and it looks to continue through the weekend. Chapelco is currently reporting a 60 cm (24 inch) mid-mountain base and 20 cm (8 inches) of new snow at the summit in the past 24 hours. Visit our Weather & Snow page for the latest forecasts.
This is a huge year for Chapelco. They will be hosting several events, including FIS South American Cup Giant Slalom races. Perhaps the biggest news for this year is the opening of their Back Bowls to the public, offering return transportation via snowcat. We will be taking a small group to sample this new terrain during our Lake District Ski Week, August 26-August 31, 2012. This new Ski Tour will start at our home base in Bariloche, continue to Villa La Angostura to check out the new gondola at Cerro Bayo, before driving the scenic Seven Lakes Route up to San Martin de Los Andes, where we will experience the latest offerings at Chapelco. We have a few spots left for the Lake District Ski Week. It is currently unpublished, but you can visit our Reservations page to sign up.
